This
nationwide effort to show our support for the families of service men and
women was established in 2004 by Don Beld, nationally recognized quilter
and historian of Redlands, California. Just
as the quilters in early American history were dedicated in their
heartfelt efforts to support the soldiers, we are working to show our
gratitude for their service and sacrifice by providing these commemorative
Home of the Brave quilts for the family of each serviceman or woman killed
in Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The
Oregon Chapter is using the
"Album Block" quilt pattern in fabrics that are based on the
prints used during the Civil War time period. If you would like to create
a block or a complete quilt, please click on the links for Patterns and
Directions. For
more information about the Sanitary Commission quilts, please visit Sanitary
Commission Quilt Stories. To date close to 2,000 quilts have been delivered to families across the country. The number of soldiers and Marines with ties to the State of Oregon who have sacrificed their lives continues to grow. We are asking Oregon quilters to join with other quilters across the United States and show their support to the families of our Oregon service men and women who have died. For more information about how you can help, please click on the link, or contact the Oregon Coordinator or National Coordinator listed to the left.
Honor them by remembering... Freedom is their gift to us.
